Wednesday, March 7th, 2007

Franktemptflyerba_1FranktemptflyerfrIf you’re in L.A. on Saturday, March 10th, make sure to stop by this once-in-a-lifetime event. “Represent, Represent! The Tempt One Art Benefit” is a one-time benefit show to raise funds for legendary Los Angeles graffiti artist Tony “Tempt” Quan. Tempt has been hospitalized for 19 months due to ALS, a degenerative muscular disease he’s battled courageously for some time now. A hundred prolific graffiti artists have rallied around the cause, donating proceeds from the sale of their works to help pay for Tempt’s medical care.

Frank On Point: Garlic Knots

Sunday, March 4th, 2007

Garlic knots just don’t get the respect that they deserve. You forget all about them until the day that you’re hungry but you’ve only got a dollar, which is about fifty cents short of a slice. Everybody knows that knots are 3 for $1. That’s the universally accepted garlic knot price point, and it isn’t going anywhere. The knots are putting in work every day, making the pizzeria smell good, taking up the empty space on the counter, soaking through the wax paper with oil and parmesan,  and you’re going to tell me that they’re less important than calzones? Get that out of here.

Garlic knots were invented in 1973 in Ozone Park, Queens. It’s hard to pinpoint the exact location, because  garlic knots were sort of a simultaneous invention, like the telephone, and they spread like wildfire. The goal was to find a way to re-use the leftover scraps of pizza dough, so it wouldn’t go to waste. The result was the most greasy, the most pungent and the most delicious $1 worth of food to ever get pushed over a cash register. Let me get 6, and sprinkle some red pepper on that too.

The Bird Bites and the Bee Stings

Saturday, March 3rd, 2007

Follow little Jimmy and a cast of freakishly odd characters in the 70s sex ed video “Am I Normal?” as they explore the phenomenon of puberty. We can’t decide who creeps us out more, Tony or the Zoo Keeper. A special thanks to John “Gargamel” Grogan for this gem.

*Ahem, ahem * cough cough cough*

Ok, so we lied about the $50.

But did you really figure out how they did that??

Da Munchies, Chimp-Style

Friday, March 2nd, 2007

Frankchimpspear3The little guy to the left never saw it coming. Frank brings you a gory tale of survival in Senegal, where American researchers recently observed chimps in the Fongoli region engaging in a very human-like behavior: hunting prey with primitive spears. When female and juvenile chimps get hungry after relinquishing good meat to full-grown males, they gnaw sturdy sticks to a fine point and jab them into tree hollows hoping to pull back an impaled bushbaby. Barbarity, or innovation? You decide. Make sure to peep the embedded videos.

Drrrrrop…

Crayz20photo_2L_dade68d16a37c92cc25a09a5d80dd3ca_1 Back in 1999, during the time of some of the early screenings of the “Freestyle” documentary, it was apparent that Frank fam C-Rayz Walz had something special. This was undoubtedly, The Voice. This time around, he also has the beats. Fire ones.
“Live In Peace” emblazons the inside of C-Rayz Walz new release, “The Dropping”.

People that have been in New York, in Hip-Hop, know Mr. Walz. They’ve come to expect a level of grit and sway with every release. This Bronx MC’s newest release is much more solid proof that “that sh*t” is well and good in countless hoods. Anthemic songs with guests no less notable than Matisyahu, Rahzel, JS-1, Poison Pen, Breez Evahflowin’ and Kosher Dillz weave throughout. Stand-out tracks like “Some MC’s”, and “Childhood” pull from a very personal place over uber solid beats. This release actually takes the listener somewhere different at every turn.

Frank looks forward to much more from Walz, as he continues to Stronghold it.

Hate On

Thursday, March 1st, 2007

Frankhate_1 We know it’s important to keep a positive attitude, but sometimes it just feels right to hate something. David Bornoff, contributor to Frank151’s Rock issue, has recently launched a new site: IFuckingHateThatShit.com, an ongoing compilation of everything he hates. In an age of self-help gurus preaching about loving yourself and positivity, it’s refreshing to see someone tackle the fucked up problems of the world head on — or at least put up a website to complain about them. Seriously though, have you looked around lately?  This place is falling apart. And by this place, we mean Earth.
