BMX NYC

BMX NYC

Frank151 caught up with Brooklyn native Karston Tannis aka Skinny, to find out what the deal is with BMX in NYC. Read the full interview after the jump.

Frank151: Who are you and where are you from?
Kaston Tannis: I’m known as “SKINNY” to a lot of people, my government name is Karston though. I grew up in various parts of Brooklyn, Crown Heights was my
home for the majority of those adolecent years.

F151: How would you describe the BMX scene in New York City? What would you like the world to know about it?
KT: The New York BMX scene is pretty relaxed. Everyone comes through with fire when its time to produce, but for the most part we all just cruise around scoping out spots or dart through the city like frogger. If anyone wants to look more into BMX they can check out these websites. SKAVENGER.com, vitalbmx.com, thecomeupbmx.net, grindstate.com.

F151: How does the NY compare to the scene in California or other parts of the country?
KT: California and New York have a lot of similarities, the biggest one being entertainment, there’s always something to do at any time of day. The thing that separates NY from a lot of places is the accessibility. You can travel anywhere for 2 dollars on the train or bus, roam around on foot, bike, or skateboard. Traffic here sucks but public transportation eases the stress.

F151:Where is your favorite place to ride in NY? If you could ride anywhere outside of NY, where would it be?
KT: My favorite place to ride is the Brooklyn Banks and Union Square without a doubt. The Banks has to be one of NYC’s most famous spot. I like Union Square because when you get tired from riding you can check out all of the beautiful ladies that walk by. I’d like to check out London or Japan someday. Riding-wise it’d be cool, but I want to get a feel for the different cultures.

F151: What is the SKAVENGER crew and who is in it?
KT: SKAVENGER is a group of friends from the NYC area. We all ride, chill, and party together. Skavenger has many meanings, one of which is searching high and low for spots to ride, places to party, and scrappin’ by any means necessary or as Vinnie says “Skavengin for food when funds are low”.

F151: What is the next step for you and your crew?
KT: The next step is to continue having fun doing what we do, and also to use BMX as a tool to propel our future careers. We’ve got some big things in the works right now, look out for the SKAVENGER video to drop within the next couple of months.
