The Art of Chess Boxing

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

Maybe this is the kind of thing you’d expect to come from Asia, or Staten Island, but it’s straight out of Germany.

The rules are simple. There is one round of chess - and then one round of boxing. Punching power alternating with brainpower.

Maybe turn the volume down for this one, so as not to have to hear all the obnoxious children asking their cooing mothers questions, but do be sure to watch the last 20 seconds.

Brand Nubian Saturday in NYC

Wednesday, November 7th, 2007

One of Frank’s favorite 90’s groups Brand Nubian will be getting down at The Knitting Factory in NYC this Saturday with Dante Ross and the illustrious Kurious (formerly Kurious Jorge). A nice piece of info for ya: Dante Ross signed Brand Nubian to their record deal with Elektra back in the day, and also did production on their classic “One For All” album with his Stimulate Dummies collective. Oh yeah, he also signed Old Dirty Bastard, De La Soul, Busta Rhymes, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Del Tha Funky Homosapien and Digital Underground. Guess we have Mr. Ross to thank for a large part of everything great about the 90’s. Witness the fitness:

Black Lodges

Monday, November 5th, 2007

Steven Vogel, author of Streetwear, and prolific blogger for HypeBeast over the past few years, has recently launched his own online platform - Black Lodges.

Black Lodges
When we asked Steven if he could provide a quote about his new project, and if it was a blog or an online magazine, Mr. Vogel simply stated “how bout this, beer drinkers and hell raisers, that sums it up pretty well.” Pretty well indeed Mr. Vogel, pretty well indeed.

Burton X KidRobot

Monday, November 5th, 2007

Burton Snowboards and Kidrobot today unveiled their limited-edition collaborative snowboard, the Burton Kidrobot Custom Plus. The inaugural collaboration between the companies has been over a year in the making and involved collaboration among multiple artists and snowboard designers.

Based on the platform of a Burton Custom 158cm snowboard, the Burton Kidrobot Custom Plus began as a blank canvas for Kidrobot founder Paul Budnitz to play with. The result is a whimsical and colorful board with a topsheet graphic that features Kidrobot’s iconic “Kidrobot head” character and a base graphic that depicts a collage of well-known Kidrobot characters including the Dunny, Smorkin Labbit and Icebot. Artists whose characters appear on the board include Paul Budnitz, Frank Kozik, Dalek, Tilt, Sket One and more.

The Burton Kidrobot Custom Plus marks the first time Kidrobot has collaborated on a snowboard. Paul Budnitz had this to say about the organic process with which Burton and Kidrobot joined forces, “Greg Dacyshyn, Burton SVP and Creative Director, and I are fans of each other’s work. When we met, we totally hit it off. A collaboration was necessary - it wasn’t even a question.”

Likewise, Greg Dacyshyn was equally stoked on the project, “I have always been a toy collector…you’re never too big to play with toys. I really love what Kidrobot does. They have an amazing design sensibility, and it really works well with what we do here at Burton. I look forward to working on more projects with them in the future.”

The Burton Kidrobot Custom Plus is being produced in super limited quantities and will be available at Burton and Kidrobot flagship stores and at very select snowboard retailers. Please stay tuned for additional Burton and Kidrobot limited edition product in the very near future. For more information please go to www.burton.com or www.kidrobot.com.
