Birthplace of Hip-Hop in Danger

DJ Kool Herc and the Rest

On a hot night in August 1973 DJ Kool Herc and his sister threw a party in their apartment building’s first-floor community room, located 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Morris Heights Neighborhood of the west Bronx. DJ Kool Herc was inspired by downtown night clubs which in the early 1970’s began using two turntables so they could play music continuously. And by the Jamaican tradition of ‘toasting’ in which he would lay-down some impromptu poetry over Funk and Reggae albums. With that hip-hop was born.

Now the residents of 1520 Sedgwick are in danger of losing their homes. The building owner BSR Managements have plans to sell the building to a real estate developer. Hip-Hop Godfathers DJ Kool Herc and Coke-Larock, along with NY Senator Chuck Schumer have started an online fundraiser in an attempt to save the building. Looking to do some philanthropy?
