SXSW 2008 and your Austin Bats

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

Frank151 and our local FDL (Frank Distro League) team the Austin Bats were in full force during this years SouthBySouthwest festival. We caught up with some old friends, and also made some new ones. The Cool Kids and all the other performers destroyed the stage at The Whisky, and our crew enjoyed many of the other festivities all week. Big shout to Buster, Richard Henry and Jabbar who helped to make it all possible.

Check the evidence below, and be sure to get a look at the soon-to-be-released blazing fire Austin Bats New Era cap we got up on our man DJ Klever.

Stimulus package = jug of Carlo Rossi

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

The IRS just sent out their “your stimulus check’s in the mail” letter, letting us all know that long as we’re honest, law-abiding, tax-paying citizens, we’ll get some bank back from the government in a couple months.  Of course, the whole thing’s pretty much a crap shoot.  It’s even worse than a short-term fix for long-term issues — and the problem isn’t just those community programs we cut to make the stimulus price tag.

The trouble is much bigger.  We’re getting this bonus bankroll just as consumer saving hits an all-time low, and none of the money we’re spending stays in the US economy. Everything we buy is made in China.  That’s the same China our government borrows all its money from.  Sounds real healthy, don’t it?

Basically, America is in some serious debt, and the stimulus package is like giving a drink to a drunk.  It’ll keep us quiet for awhile, but in the end we’re all gonna get screwed up.

Don’t mistake — free loot is awesome; we’ll be out there spending that check just like everyone else. But this little economic indulgence is going to cost us more and more as time goes on…

Besides being mentor and high school teacher to Frank Miller (Sin City), Jeff Danziger is arguably the best editorial cartoonist operating today.  Thoughtful, nuanced comics, totally brutal to both right & left… Check out his archives; he tosses new stuff up there constantly.

2008 is a Tuff Gong era

Two new movies about Bob Marley’s life are set to drop this year.  But with Martin “Guaranteed Dope” Scorsese’s documentary with Tuff Gong Pictures scheduled for release the same weekend as a biopic from the Weinstein brothers and Rita Marley, a clash of family wills is steady simmering.  Most notably, Tuff Gong has refused the Weinsteins access to Marley’s music for the bio, which is based on Rita’s autobiography, No Woman No Cry.

Take a look at Chapter 30, curated by Tuff Gong, and our stylin’ new collabo fitted below.

With all this drama (and the resulting press), we’re hopin’ both flicks will wind up blockbusters… and praying they don’t end up sabotaging each other, like the Democratic party seems determined to.

But no worries; it looks like the Weinsteins are Marley fans.  A deal is being negotiated where the Weinsteins will just double up their Marley output and buy a share of the Scorsese flick — sitting on their biopic for a few months out of respect.

“Haro Hara” Columbia Univ. screening

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

Sam Holt in association with Frank fam Permanent Marks, LLC will screen their Hindu devotional pilgrimage film, “Haro Hara - Pilgrimage to Kataragama, Sri Lanka,” tomorrow, March 26th, 2008 at the Southern Asian Institute at Columbia University. “Haro Hara” follows a growing band of mostly Tamil pilgrims on a 2 month foot journey in honor of the Lord Murugan. This film is crazy for its trance scenes and extensive examination of Hindu devotional practices. Check out a guy who cracks like 50 coconuts on his forehead, the woman who goes into trance and crams her hands into the holes of a cobra’s nest and the dudes who roll around a temple on their stomachs all day long.
