Blade Runner

For all the NYC heads - If you happen to be in the East Village tonight, take a break from perving on all the sundresses and go see Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner - The Final (Seriously This Time) Cut at sundown in Tompkins Square Park. This robot-killin’ sci-fi classic is showing as part of the Films In Tompkins summer film series. Enjoy and make sure to flex your usage of words like “dystopian” and “retro-futurist”, or everyone will think you are a total poser.

Leave it to the Canadians to do their part to be greener!

Over the past year, rumors on the Internet have been circulating about a new public bike system (PBS) that was in the works for North America (following the super-successful French system that’s 10,000 strong in Paris). Now our time has finally arrived, and the first American project looks like a winner.

New York City has a pilot bike-share program of its own, set to run from July 7 to July 11 this summer. Riders will be able to check a bike out and ride it to their destination for under .50 cents a trip throughout the week, and the test run’s results will be presented, along with speeches from design and transportation experts, July 9 - 11 at the Storefront for Art & Architecture (at 97 Kenmare St).

Read more about the Canadian bike sharing via Ecofriend; or about the New York City project and the worldwide movement from NYBikeShare directly.

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

Embasi reigns as New Hampshire’s top skate, sneaker and streetwear shop. They have been holding it down for a while now in Lebanon, NH, and this weekend will mark their new store opening in Manchester. They’re setting it off with a blowout bash, and the Frank Distro League is happy to be a part of it. If you’re in the Southern New Hampshire area, be sure to check them out.

Youth…the uhh…7th element of Hip Hop.

Cutest kids ever? Probably. Sure their handstand game is a little slow, but you know that’s only because they threw their backs out destroying your kid in a battle a few weeks ago. Big ups to their parents. This kind of greatness brought to you byThe Yard, by the way, where even the kids can come hang out.

Stay tuned 18 years from now when one of these little dudes curates his own issue of Frank. (Video shot exclusively for Frank).

R.I.P. George Carlin

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

It’s a sad day for free speech, comedy, and humanity in general. George Carlin, legendary comedian and actor, died yesterday night of heart failure after being admitted to St. John’s Hospital, complaining of chest pain. He was 71 years old. George broke a lot of rules and set a lot of standards, and we all owe a bit of our free speech to his kind of comedy.

In tribute, the famous “7 words…”

“Most physicists believe the risk of a cataclysm lies in the realms of science fiction. But there have been fears about the possibility of a mini-black hole - produced in the collider - swelling so that it gobbles up the Earth.”

a/k/a Tommy Chong

Frank151 had the opportunity to talk with director Josh Gilbert about the controversy surrounding Tommy Chong’s questionable federal indictment, along with Gilbert’s documentary a/k/a Tommy Chong that was seized by federal agents without any explanation. The counter-culture icon was sentenced to prison time after he sold glass bongs across state lines, and what follows illustrates the corruption of the U.S. Judicial System and the precarious foundation of the First Amendment.
