Wood Grain Four Finger Ring

Last week Keri O’Connell, the lady behind Good Wood NYC, stopped by the Frank151 office and laced us with this custom Frank151 four-finger ring. We had a chance to chop it up with Kerri about her wood workin’ skills.

Frank151: Tell the people how you started

Good Wood NYC: I started a year ago, making wooden jewelry based off classic urban designed jewelry, instead of metal.

F151: How did you originally get inspired to make custom rings?

GW: I wanted to do my own design: personalized rings the way I wanted. I didn’t want to pay for it. I made a couple custom designs for some friends, and others became interested in my work, so I decided to run with the idea.

F151: Did you get an “A” in wood-shop as kid?

GW: I never took wood-shop, but I probably would have aced it. I went to art school most of my life, somehow I picked up woodworking.

F151: Dirty South rappers make a lot of references to wood grain wheels and interior for their cars, did this have any influence on you to go with custom wood rings instead of gold?

GW: Sort of. I am a fan of the custom wood grain car work. I always liked wooden designs, from jewelry accessories to household items.

F151: Do you feel you’re competing with gold jewelry making counterparts?

GW: I do feel some competition with gold jewelry makers, but people seem more interested in my work because they are involved in the art and concept of the custom design.

F151: Who are some of the bigger clients that you’ve made custom rings for?

GW: Ninja Sonic was the first music artist to use my work. Poison Pen and a few other underground hip-hop artists have, too. You can find my work at selected shops like Platform NYC in the Bronx and Mini Mini Market in Williamsburg.
