The Birth of The Cool

Sunday, August 24th, 2008

“The War had left a population bereft of resources in the UK while America ruminated on the birth of consumerism. Rumblings of discontent were heard the world over, but it was perhaps in Great Britain that the most visually beguiling teenage cult of all time was to be born: The Teddy Boy.”

Catch the rest of this story, written by Chris Sullivan, and many others in Frank Book 34, guest curated by Zoltar the Magnificent. Look for the Book at Flagship Retail Network™ Locations soon!

Jean Grae Tonight / Billy Jam Live Radio Brodcast Today

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

Jean Grae makes a return to the NY stage Tonight at the Knitting Factory in Tribeca. The Knitting Factory will be closing it’s current location at the end of the year and relocating (like everyone else) to Brooklyn. That said, this may be the last time Jean will rock there. Look for The New York Kings to be pairing with this legendary venue for several shows to come in the near future.

Also,  as the preeminent rap tail-gate party to tomorrow night’s Jean Grae show ….

WFMU will be broadcasting live from the Knitting Factory Front Bar tomorrow from 3pm-6pm. It is free to the public, and part of the illustrious Billy Jam’s Friday afternoon show. Billy was a  big part of the DJ revolution of the mid-late 90’s in the Bay Area. This will be the 3rd time doing this from the club. The BAR will be OPEN, so come thru on some Friday happy-hour/after-work type shit and see some emcees rap and have a brew or two.

Today - 3pm-6pm / free to public

Legends of Style Saturday in Greenpoint

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

Saturday, August 30, 2008:
Joshua Ivory presents “Legends of Style” Exhibit
Alphabeta 70 Greenpoint Ave Brooklyn NY 11222
feat. legendary NYC subway graffiti artists of the 70’s & 80’s.
Opening: 7pm - 12am. Exhibit runs through Sept. 26, 2008.

“Among the multitude of writers (aerosol artists) from the 1970’s & 80’s, only a certain percentage understood the science of “breathing life into letters”. These artists gave letters rhythm and a purpose. Not only were these legendary writers capable of producing highly stylized letters, they were also masters at adorning them with hypnotizing colors and unimaginable schemes and themes. True kings of their craft, they helped revolutionize the scene with a graphic lean! Their work assaulted the senses to the point where you can taste the colors, smell the composition and feel their artistic fury. Having them all in one exhibit is practically overwhelming and invokes high anxiety in any hardcore writer or supporter of the culture.” - Popmaster Fabel

Route Tour: Heavy Metal In Baghdad

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

Heavy Metal In Baghdad - Directed by Suroosh Alvi

Heavy Metal in Baghdad is a feature film documentary that follows the
Iraqi heavy metal band Acrassicauda from the fall of Saddam Hussein in
2003 to the present day.   Playing heavy metal in a Muslim country has
always been a difficult (if not impossible) proposition, but after
Saddam’s regime was toppled, there was a brief moment for the band in
which real freedom seemed possible.  That hope was quickly dashed as
their country fell into a bloody insurgency.  From 2003-2006, Iraq
disintegrated around them while Acrassicauda struggled to stay
together and stay alive, always refusing to let their heavy metal
dreams die.  Their story echoes the unspoken hopes of an entire
generation of young Iraqis.

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

We’re still not sure if this is real…

angel-pantoja-medina.jpg

A Puerto Rican man has been granted his wish to remain standing—even in death. A funeral home used a special embalming treatment to keep the corpse of 24-year-old Angel Pantoja Medina standing upright for his three-day wake.
