We've been checking for Jovi Rockwell (aka The Rebel Goddess) for a while, so when this mixtape dropped we were amped to take a listen. Jovi drops her lyrics (that she sings, raps and deejays) over a fusion of Jamaican music (dancehall and reggae), electro, hip-hop and r&b, to create her style, which has caught the attention of a good grip of listeners.
Born in Kingston Jamaica to Cabaret Singer Winston Clarke and Fashionista and Beautician Marva Bloomfield-Clarke, Jovi is the definition of Uptown meets Downtown. A formula she says is embedded in her DNA . A formula which allows her to break the class barriers in her home town of Norbrook Kingston in her Native land of Jamaica. "Music is Music, and I represent a culture not a specific area, the only time you belong in a box is when your dead" Jovi says, unapologetically. Her diversity has lead to the strong independent following. From songwriting with Ne-Yo, to recording duets with Akon & also featuring on the hipster-esque "Major Lazer" album (produced by Diplo & Switch) this summer.
