Frank Chapter 43: Bug Out! Mix by Rob Wonder

A Day In The Life of Neil Armstrong (Video)

Canadian retailer Ransom dropped this video this past weekend profiling New York native DJ Neil Armstrong. This serves as a peek into a day in his life, one where he has found himself the backing/tour DJ for Jay-Z, one of the biggest names in music. To call Neil a "Turntablist" or a "Mixtape DJ" would not reveal any substantial part of the story. Neil came up alongside the greats of the 90's New York DJ scene. These are folks that are often overlooked when people talk DJ culture; Guys like Rob Swift, J-Smoke, DJ Excess, Fat Fingaz, JS-1, DJ Supreme along with his own crew: The 5th Platoon.

Always operating out of the Battle DJ Circuit as well, Neil moved on to create two mix-cd series that really brought his name to the worldwide DJ stage: the Sweet series and the Original series. Sweet and Bittersweet were a headfirst dive into the r&b and soul of the 70's and 80's that you may not own, but you DEFINITELY know. These were the consummate baby making cds. Original and 2Original were a fusing of some of the most classic (mostly 90's) hip-hop tunes with the songs that they sampled from. Using technology to his advantage while preserving DJ skills, Neil changed the game for mixtape DJs in many ways with these CDs. The story goes that Jay-Z had a Neil Armstrong CD on rotation on tour, and the rest is DJ history. With that, take a look into: A Day In The Life Of DJ Neil Armstrong.
