Keeping Guard: Artist Skye Nicolas Responds To Japanese Crisis (Photo)

Skye Nicolas

In the wake of the Japanese earthquake/tsunami, a New York city artist stepped forward, using his talent to reconcile and commemorate the tragedy.

Skye Nicolas has been projecting famous Japanese animated characters known to many as Super Robots, onto different facade's in various parts of Soho, Union Square and Chinatown.  During the night, vivid images of anime and manga characters like Getter Robo G and UFO Grendizer, light the cityscape in spirit of Japan.
The images are strong, hopeful and resilient, guarding the city against unknown destruction.  A constant reminder of the distressing affair, yet one that brings up feelings of camaraderie and youthful innocence; the installations serves the importance of art as an expression of pain---recycled to produce hope.  Nicolas delicately reminds us that despite the devastations of the recent events, humanity if far stronger than the powers that be.
