The Weeknd Emerges @ Mod Club (Video)
Abel Tesfaye aka The Weekend, finally appeared the other night @ Mod Club in Toronto’s Little Italy. Long have people scoured the internet for pictures and information on this guy, as he has kept himself pretty shrouded in mystery. I typically find that pretty admirable, but after reading an expert on him, I find the whole thing pretty self-masturbatory:
The first time I met Abel Tesfaye was at an unofficial NXNE party I threw on the roof of my old apartment. We had about 200 people out there in classic, unsanctioned and probably very unsafe fashion. The five kegs we started tapping at three pm had run out by seven, so I had to head over to the Beer Store with my then-roommate to grab more cases of Pabst. On our way back, twelve packs stacked high in my arms, I realized I was walking behind The Weeknd‘s crew who call themselves XO, and they were heading to my house. Most of them only wear camouflage. Their Twitter accounts are the definition of too cool for school. They’re all about XO being their crew (and you can’t join), mysterious yfrog uploads of Toronto condos, allusions to new material dropping soon and very low “Following” numbers. It’s all this mystery-creating hype that has helped build The Weeknd into the extremely popular property that he’s become. And, it makes meeting him in real life a very strange experience in that, oh shit, you’re actually a real person, kind of way. - EarMilk
First of all, camoflauge hasn't been cool since the '90s and guess what, it's not coming back. Second, if you are so seclusive, maybe you should change your crew name to something that doesn't represent BIG HUG BIG KISS in popular culture. Right? I understand creating hype, which they have masterfully done, but I guess the fact that it doesn't correlate to an admirable undesired popularity trait is what's disappointing to me. Instead, it reaks of "I was never cool enough in HS/College so now I am going to pwn you all with my XO club" and or "I never got bitch slapped for being such a bitch before." Unfortunately, it's too late.
Anyways, here's the vid of his first official live gig. Do you hate my opinion? Comment and let me know what you think.
