Chapter 36: Erotica

Release Date: Spring 2009

A global muse, deep in fashion, music and art, currently making a living as an über-stylist, sculpting singer Rihanna into an icon—Lysa Cooper partnered with Frank151 to explore her not-so-hidden passion: Erotica.

Lysa has been in the mix since the ‘80s, starting as a DJ, actress, singer, and stylist, ultimately creating her own burlesque club, Juicy, with like-minded souls—actress and DJ Belinda Becker and restauranteur Serge Becker. Profiled in the New Yorker, writer Hilton Als observed the juncture of fashion and sexuality that Juicy provided, noting Lysa as, “the cynosure of any event.” As he described, “Dressed in a black T-shirt with the word ‘Whore’ studded on the front, bronze leather pants with complicated lacing in back, and platform boots, she looks like an embodiment of the attitude Tina Turner tried to project in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome: menacing but adorable.”

Frank Book Chapter 36, Erotica, is not only a luscious jewel of sexualised thought and imagery; it is also an event. There are few people more qualified to bring such a nuanced moment to life than Lysa Cooper.

With collaborators, contributors and co-conspirators including Francesco Clemente, Ellen Von Unwerth, Marc Baptiste, Anthony Mandler, Ellen Stagg, and interviews with fetish and fashion designers such as Mr. Pearl, Body Worship, Agatha (Custom Leather NYC), Coco de Mer, Siren, and many more, the Erotica Chapter is not only instantly collectable, it is also a Baedeker’s guide to contemporary imagery, thought and expression of the eclectic sexualisation of the imagination.

Modern Muse

Words: Jill Sellsman
Photos: Marc Baptiste

There are always NY women, who when they were in that moment in time, the image that they rocked helped define an era. Edie Sedgwick at the Factory in the ’60s, Debbie Harry in Sprouse at CBGB in the ’70s, Madonna in Maripol at Danceteria in the early ’80s. And then there are those who are creating that look, that expressed experience, refining it before it can be exposed to the masses. Lysa Cooper, art-world muse, super stylist, and all-around girl about town, in any town that she’s in—NY, London, Tokyo, LA, Paris, Goa—is one of them. Like all artists, she’s ‘there’ before we’re even thinking that ‘there’ might be a there there.
