Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

Frank151 would like to congratulate accused crack cocaine dealer Guillermo Alarcon Jr. on his recent acquittal. In a Los Angeles court house, 2 police officers were caught lying about a suspect they accused of selling crack in front of his apartment building. The conviction of Guillermo depended on the police officers testimony. But the police officers were unaware of a nearby surveillance camera that had captured the true story behind the arrest. California Love

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008
There is an initiative in the works that could end up on the November ballot that allows for marijuana to be sold to anyone, and anywhere that already sells alcohol. Its being called The Inalienable Rights Enforcement Initiative. This initiative will amend the Constitution of California to defend and safeguard the inalienable rights of the People against infringement by governments and corporations, providing for the lawful growth, sale, and possession of marijuana. Marijuana will be taxed through a system of stamps and licenses–a $5 stamp will be required for the sale of an eighth ounce of marijuana and a $50 annual license will be required for the growth of one marijuana plant. To protect participants and encourage participation in the system, such licenses and stamps will be available anonymously in stores where marijuana is sold.

So instead of getting some quack doctor to give you a prescription for $100 because of your supposed “anxiety” or alleged “insomnia”, you will just pay an extra tax each time you buy yourself another 8th.

Aside from allowing all willing adults to be able to buy weed easily, this initiative will start to generate revenue for California, and stimulate our struggling economy. More weed stores means more jobs for Californians, more taxes to be collected, and more people enjoying better weed. And finally marijuana will be put into the same file as Alcohol and Cigarettes where it belongs, instead of it being equated with crack-cocaine and heroine.

For the full story, check out laist.com.

However, there has to be a catch–even if the state were to pass this initiative, the federal government would barge in and crack down on it indefinitely. But for now, let’s savor the possibilites…

Mr. Yuk is mean, Mr. Yuk is green…

Monday, June 9th, 2008

Mr. Yuk was conceived in 1971 as the mascot for the poison control center at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. The Mr. Yuk symbol has been used as a replacement for the traditional skull-and-crossbones (a.k.a. Jolly Roger) warning label for poison. This is because some young children are thought to associate this symbol with pirates and therefore may misinterpret it as an invitation to ingest the poison.

Is it still cheating if everyone is doing it? This Friday “Bigger Stronger Faster” hits selected theaters, covering the dirt behind the steroid controversy here in America. From the producers of Fahrenheit 9/11 and Bowling for Columbine, this one should be interesting.

Free pot, courtesy of the government

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

It’s the third installment of what’s apparently becoming our “free from the government” series – articles highlighting governments and agencies around the world who are, whether they know it or not, giving brilliant hand-outs to the public (previously: free hookers, free Viagra) — and this time, a lucky passenger arriving Japan’s Narita Airport yesterday left with about 5 ounces of herb in his bag… put there by airport security.

marijuana-mar-com-1.jpg

It’s true. An officer at Narita Airport stuffed the side-pocket of a random incoming bag with cannabis, as an exercise for his drug-sniffing dog’s nose. But the dog didn’t find the weed, and then the officer forgot which bag he put the package in… Basically, one thing led to another and now the luggage is gone – presumably collected by its owner.

We’ve got two thoughts on this one: either A. the officer was getting high himself (which explains forgetting what bag he chose), or B. the officer was actually supplementing his meager Airport Security wage by slipping some government pot into a bag which an accomplice could casually exit with… which would be sheer genius.

And of course, C. is “damn, wish that was my luggage”….

Recently launched, Scientific Facts of Pot.com is a new site which provides a cohesive guide to the scientific truths of marijuana. The sites features regular updates on new studies as they are concluded and released and a massive collection of links to official scientific studies, held by everyone from medical schools at Danish and Israeli Universities to California cardiovascular institutes.

Studies primarily focus on the health impacts of cannabis and THC; topics include marijuana’s ability to combat heart disease, cancer, diabetes, osteoperosis, Alzheimer’s, liver disease, epilepsy, skin allergies, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and depression.

And that’s just a taste.

America’s legal system is like a retarded mule

Friday, May 9th, 2008

If we learned anything from The Wire, it’s that the Drug War is totally insane. Which we already sort of knew.

But then we hear stories like this, and we realize that the rest of the country still hasn’t figured it out.

pd_prison_070627_ms.jpg

The United States is home to less than five percent of the world’s population – but almost a quarter of the world’s prison population. We have more prisoners than anyplace else in the world, both in terms of percentage and sheer numbers.

We’re talking about 2.3 million Americans behind US bars; China, with four times our population, is a distant second, with 1.6 million prisoners.

Worse, in the 1980s we had about 40,000 people in jail for drug crimes; today, it’s over half a million.

The NY Times‘ national legal correspondant, Adam Liptak, spoke with NPR’s Fresh Air yesterday. Author of the Times’ recent series of legal criticism, “The American Exception,” Liptak tries to make sense of the ridiculously unbalanced political system we’ve got going on – and figure out why we’ve got more people in prison than any other country in the world.

Surprise, surprise — the problem’s our law enforcement, legal and judicial systems… not our people.

Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soap Sues

Friday, May 9th, 2008

Dr. Bronner’s

Following the Organic Consumers Association’s revelations that so-called “organic” or “natural” product brands were actually made with toxic chemicals such as 1,4-dioxane, Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps has sued numerous companies in the industry that it accuses of using misleading labeling to deceive consumers. The lawsuit is meant to encourage the named companies (see list below) to either reformulate their products to eliminate the petrochemical materials, or to change their labeling and stop using the words “organic” or “natural” on their products.Companies sued by Dr. Bronner’s include Estee Lauder, Ecocert, OASIS, Stella McCartney’s CARE, Jasön, Avalon Organics, Nature’s Gate, Kiss My Face, Ikove and others. Each of the companies being sued, says Dr. Bronner’s, are using potentially dangerous chemicals that certainly don’t qualify as natural or organic. The product categories include shampoo, body wash, liquid soap, skin cleansers and other personal care products.
