The Claw Game Come Up

Monday, July 14th, 2008

Check out how this 2 year old kid figures out an (almost) ingenious way to rip off the claw game at the arcade. Good for her, that game was a scam anyways.

Gunnin’ For That #1 Spot

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

On the corner of 155th and Frederick Douglas Boulevard in Harlem lies Rucker Park. By appearances, the concrete pavement, anchored on one side by its run down slab bleachers, is no different than any other basketball court in the city, but this is the place where nicknames are indelibly branded, and legends are born.

On September 1, 2006, the top 24 high school basketball players in the nation stepped out on this court, that once saw the likes of Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Dr. J to compete in the first annual “Elite 24” all-star game. GUNNIN’ FOR THAT #1 SPOT follows eight of these players as they prepare to showcase their skills at the most legendary playground in the world.

Directed by Adam Yauch (MCA of the Beastie Boys and director of “Awesome; I F***ing Shot That!”), the documentary trails these players on the fast track to the NBA, as they are being groomed to be in the spotlight of a multi-million dollar game. Combining Yauch’s unique directing style with raw hip hop music, GUNNIN’ highlights these soon to be NBA All Stars.

The film opens this Friday, June 27th. Check listings here.

Shoot the candidates

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

The more we read election coverage, with all the petty bullshit and infighting that’s flying around, the more fun “Presidential Paintball” gets.

The online video game company who made it, Miniclip.com, came under fire today for releasing this.  Apparently, people weren’t too happy about the idea of a game where players center the crosshairs on presidential candidates — “paintball” or not.

Where’s their sense of humor?  We’re just pissed the game doesn’t let you shoot Huckabee.

No more searching for Bobby Fischer

Friday, January 18th, 2008

Bobby Fischer, a high school dropout from Brooklyn who became the most famous chess player of all time, died yesterday of kidney failure.

After becoming the world’s youngest Grandmaster at 15, and scoring a Cold War victory for the US by defeating Boris Spassky (the Russian world champion) on national television in ‘72, Bobby went a little nuts and began spitting venom like a snake.  He renounced his US citizenship, alienated the world with anti-Semitic radio rants (even though he’s Jewish himself), and praised September 11’s terrorist attacks on his old hometown as “wonderful news.”

We’ve decided to ignore that last part of his life. Before then, Bobby was a King. He was a prodigy, from humble BK origins, who rose on nothing but skills. He brought chess to the public eye, even gave it some swagger — he compared pro chess to pro boxing, and acted accordingly.

“Chess is war on a board. The object is to crush the other man’s mind.”

Notorious for his raw bravado, he famously psyched his opponents out during matches and took pleasure in their defeat: “I like watching them squirm,” he once told reporters.  Basically, when he was on top, dude was the most badass chess champ possible.

The harder they come…

pong.jpg

35 years ago this week, Nolan Bushnell invented Pong…  and the world was changed forever.

And so, with the first pings of Pong’s sound card, Atari – the world’s first video game – was born.

The company’s risen and fallen and risen again.  Renewed interest in recent years has allowed the company to release revised and updated versions of their original 1970’s arcade games, both for computers & game systems and as cabinet-style arcade machines, which have begun making their way into bars.

In honor of Nolan and his contribution to society, we suggest you take a moment to play an old school video game this week… and have a drink, to toast the pioneers, while you’re at it.

But Barcade (Union & Powers off the Lorimer L) is tired — it’s getting so crowded you can hardly play the games. In response, serious game playaz (get it?) have got their Tapper and their taps at home. Check out the genius idea here.

If you got the time and money for this thing… invite us over.

In the meantime, we’ll be cracking a bottle and playing Tapper at home for free.

The Art of Chess Boxing

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

Maybe this is the kind of thing you’d expect to come from Asia, or Staten Island, but it’s straight out of Germany.

The rules are simple. There is one round of chess - and then one round of boxing. Punching power alternating with brainpower.
