pong.jpg

35 years ago this week, Nolan Bushnell invented Pong…  and the world was changed forever.

And so, with the first pings of Pong’s sound card, Atari – the world’s first video game – was born.

The company’s risen and fallen and risen again.  Renewed interest in recent years has allowed the company to release revised and updated versions of their original 1970’s arcade games, both for computers & game systems and as cabinet-style arcade machines, which have begun making their way into bars.

In honor of Nolan and his contribution to society, we suggest you take a moment to play an old school video game this week… and have a drink, to toast the pioneers, while you’re at it.

But Barcade (Union & Powers off the Lorimer L) is tired — it’s getting so crowded you can hardly play the games. In response, serious game playaz (get it?) have got their Tapper and their taps at home. Check out the genius idea here.

If you got the time and money for this thing… invite us over.

In the meantime, we’ll be cracking a bottle and playing Tapper at home for free.

The Art of Chess Boxing

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

Maybe this is the kind of thing you’d expect to come from Asia, or Staten Island, but it’s straight out of Germany.

The rules are simple. There is one round of chess - and then one round of boxing. Punching power alternating with brainpower.
