San Genaro 2008: Cannoli Eating Competition

Canolli KING Holding FRANK NY

Frank151 ventured over to the ever so memorable San Genaro Festival in NYC this past Friday. If you are  not familiar, the San Genaro festival is an annual street fest that celebrates Italian-American pride (although parts can be more of an embarrassment). It stretches the whole length of Mulberry from SoHo into what is left of Little Italy.

We were fortunate enough to catch the Cannoli Eating Competition. We certainly can’t imagine eating a cannoli in the near future after witnessing the sugar carnage. The competition, sanctioned by the International Federation of Competitive Eating (IFOCE), was won in an upset by newcomer Brad “The Milk Man” Sciullo,  who ate over 20 cannoli at 500 calories a piece. Several of the IFOCE big hitters were in the house, such as Allen Goldstein, “Crazy Legs” Conti (as seen on Sopranos, who passed up a $10k prize at a grits eating competition in Louisiana to have a shot at cannoli pride) and Big Brian Subich, amongst a dozen others. ALL OF THIS FOR NO PRIZE EXCEPT PRIDE! Sciullo was so excited after his first gastronomical victory that he broke out in tears as the crowd cheered his victory. The best part: Sciullo continued to eat cannoli as he posed for pictures and gave interviews to the press (seriously, check the pictures after the jump).

We salute you Brad Sciullo, a true NY KING!

Houston Beef!

Last month, The City of Houston proclaimed July 22nd, Trae day.

In honor of his outstanding work within the community, the city of Houston is honoring Trae with his own day, the first time this honor has been extended to a rap artist.

Last night Houston hosted the final night of the Ozone awards at the George R. Brown convention center. Some unexpected beef arose with Trae (Rap-A-Lot) punching Mike Jones, leaving him with a bloody nose. Here is what Trae had to say.

Pocket your verses

April is National Poetry Month, and today NYC is hosting National Poem In Your Pocket Day in celebration.  Volunteers will be on the streets, handing out poems to the public and encouraging New Yorkers to carry a poem in their pockets to share with friends, family and strangers.  Keep your eyes out.

Since most of our New York fam is rolling the streets, pocketing rhymes at all times, we figure this is just an opportunity for everyone else in the city to catch up.

So get out there and spit some verses today — show ‘em how it’s done.

Also, if you bring a poem to any of the following museums today, you’ll get free admission:

Bronx Museum of the Arts
Museum of the City of New York
Brooklyn Historical Society
Staten Island Museum
P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center
Queens Museum of Art

Visit the official Poem In Your Pocket site here.

Jingle what?

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

Holidaze is here.

Microsoft had to pull the plug last week on an instant messenging system the company had devised so children could email Santa their xmas lists.  Why?  Because of a bug in the system, the automated Santa was talking dirty to the kids.

The problem came to Microsoft’s attention when a UK reporter documented the program’s chat session with his underage neices.  Apparently, after the girls repeatedly asked if he would eat their pizza, the online Santa couldn’t stand it anymore and began talking about oral sex.  Literally.

And this is the guy we’re telling kids is going to come down their chimney late at night?

Go here for more of the story… direct from Microsoft’s own news source.

Happy Repeal Day!

Tuesday, December 4th, 2007

Jeffrey Morgenthaler is spot on with his comments on the the often overlooked, though momentous occasion in American history, now known as Repeal Day:

Folks, there are a few drinking holidays here in the United States, but I’m here to tell you that none of them are as important as the new celebration I’m proposing for this great country of ours. Repeal Day (December 5th) is not celebrated by anyone in this country, yet it is the only day which truly has any connection with alcohol.

Frank151 would like to thank all of those olde thymers who voted to abolish prohibition, and a special nod to our friends at Dewar’s:

It was on December 5, 1933 that the 21st Amendment was ratified and Prohibition was terminated. And, Dewar’s Scotch - the first legal whisky to arrive in the U.S. - hit New York’s South Street Seaport docks the moment the law was put into action.

Drink up, America. It’s your right.
