A Few Too Many

hangover.gifNot that they need the plug, but The New Yorker magazine had a good article on hangovers this week, written by Joan Acocella:

If scientists do not have a cure for cancer, that makes sense. But the common cold, the menstrual cramp? The hangover is another condition of this kind. It is a preventable malady: don’t drink. Nevertheless, people throughout time have found what seemed to them good reason for recourse to alcohol.

Pocket your verses

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

April is National Poetry Month, and today NYC is hosting National Poem In Your Pocket Day in celebration.  Volunteers will be on the streets, handing out poems to the public and encouraging New Yorkers to carry a poem in their pockets to share with friends, family and strangers.  Keep your eyes out.

Since most of our New York fam is rolling the streets, pocketing rhymes at all times, we figure this is just an opportunity for everyone else in the city to catch up.

So get out there and spit some verses today — show ‘em how it’s done.

Also, if you bring a poem to any of the following museums today, you’ll get free admission:

Bronx Museum of the Arts
Museum of the City of New York
Brooklyn Historical Society
Staten Island Museum
P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center
Queens Museum of Art

Visit the official Poem In Your Pocket site here.

MURDALAND

murdaland1cover3.jpg

Rising up from Baltimore and Pittsburgh’s bullet-riddled streets like a prophetic junkie, Murdaland is a blood-soaked blessing for anyone who loves crime stories as much as Frank151 does.

Recently named Best Literary Journal 2007 by Baltimore’s City Paper, the mag collects some of the best hardcore crime fiction around, from both undiscovered talent and highly respected authors; the second issue also featured a first hand nonfiction narrative, from an anonymous US military official currently stationed in Iraq.

Frank’s been digging the first two books pretty hard – we loaned our copy of the first out so much, the cover’s probably fallen off by now.   Needless to say, we jumped at the chance when Murdaland Editor-in-Chief Michael Langnas took time out to sit down with Frank151 and talk shop… which apparently meant talking about beer commercials, Ernest Hemingway and “festering lust” in an Olive Garden.  Enjoy.      (more…)

MF Grimm spells it all out

Wednesday, December 5th, 2007

MF Grimm’s new graphic memoir is out.  The book tells his life story — from Sesame Street to New York streets, from bullets to jail, to freedom and starting up Day By Day Entertainment — all in comic book style.   Now he’s doing the rounds promoting the book…  but who’d predict he’d be all over public radio?  His interview on NPR’s Fresh Air is worth repeat listens:
