Louie Vito Lands A Triple-Double! (Video)

Our boy Louie Vito made history at the European X-Games by being the first person to ever open a run with three back to back to back tricks like this. The fact that Vito's score - a 92.33 - didn't beat Crepel's was upsetting. The crowd went wild, but the judges didn't seem to be as impressed and only gave him the bronze. Regardless, big shout out to Louie, and we look forward to seeing him tear up half pipes just as hard next season.

Colorado’s Willett Takes the Gold in Snowboard Slopestyle at X Games Europe

Tignes, France – Last month, Breckenridge resident Eric Willett took home a silver medal from Snowboard Slopestyle at Winter X Games 14 in Aspen. Today in the men’s final in Tignes, France, Willett upgraded and will bring gold back to his hometown in Colorado.

“I wasn’t really landing my tricks in practice, but somehow it all clicked and came together for me in the final,” Willett said about his win.After his second run put him in the lead, he said, “I had no idea what I was going to do, and I’m so stoked right now. The course is perfect and the riding level is insane.”

Willett threw down a solid second run that put him in the lead for the gold medal with his mixed tricks of backside 720, frontside double cork 1080 and switch backside 900. USA’s Sage Kotsenburg followed close behind to win silver. Marko Grilc of Slovakia took the bronze.

What the fuck is ZEF ?

Been looking into this South African music scene that I think is probably go to take over the indie dance world here in 2010. Die Antwoord just played Cinespace for a secret show and the hype around them is crazy! But there is some other dope music coming out on this same tip. Peep out Jack Parrow and I found this on a board on the interweb (see SA slang, already using it) it sums up this Zef thing pretty well.

The question to Die Antwoord, I believe, is an Afrikaans website called Wat Kyk Jy? (“What are you looking at, mate?”, that ominous last sentence you’ll hear in a pub before waking up on the ground).

The site pays homage to Afrikaans slang and zef ? an Afrikaans term that roughly translates to what we in South Africa also refer to as “common”: clapped-out Ford Cortinas with fur on the dashboard, tight mom jeans pulled up too high, “synth-heavy ringtone rave”, mullets. Zef isn’t a music style, and it’s not limited to any one culture or location, obviously, but www.watkykjy.co.za celebrates it particularly well in Afrikaans (the site was born, incidentally, in Pretoria, 1000km north of CT).

So yes, Cape Town is also full of zef, and what Ninja, Yo-lande and their crew are tapping into brilliantly is zef in the coloured community (the official SA term for mixed-race people) of the gangster-ridden Cape Flats, which would include rap in the street venac mix of English and Afrikaans.

Red Bull THRE3STYLE Denver At The Church

The Red Bull Thre3Style international event series came through Denver last Thursday for one of its 14 stops on the way to the U.S. National Finals in October, which also happens to be back in Denver. The Red Bull Thre3Style brings local DJs out for one night of party rocking to see who can most successfully blend at least three genres of music and get the place jumpin’. A discerning panel of judges including the Denver Diggers’ DJ Lowkey took notes on creativeness, technicality and overall energy that the elite crew of Denver’s finest brought to the stage. DJs Amen, Sounds Supreme, Soup, Psycho, Shares, Skip Rip, Mada and Magmanimous went head to head to see for the title of Denver’s best DJ, with a special closing performance by Jay-Z’s tour DJ Neil Armstrong.

The Church was the setting for this event, Denver's longtime staple of dance-oriented nightlife in the SoCo (South of Colfax) club district. Red Bull had a great presence as always, complete with the all-terrain mobile party unit parked outside, a well-designed lit logo over the stage and screens throughout the venue displaying each competitors’ name and time allotted.

Denver Diggers' DJ Lowkey got the night started right as the crowd filled in.

Never any shortage of B-Boys at a Denver party.

Analog Sublimated Denim Outerwear

If you watched the Half-Pipe Snowboard competition in the Olympics, you may have noticed that a slew of the boarders were wearing snowboard pants that looked just like denim. We all know snowboard pants aren't made of denim, but of course everyone loves the look of it. Analog Clothing has been using their photo-real sublimation technique for the past 3 years. This is a technique used to create garments that look exactly like, say, denim, or flannel, but are not. This process allows for exact reproduction of digital art and photos onto synthetic fabrics, and is limitless in the possibilities when applying artwork to wearable, Analog technical garments.

The process of sublimation printing differs from traditional “roller,” or “wet” printing in that artwork can be separated and reproduced in a similar fashion to print magazine or paper media rather than through the tedious and sometimes limiting process of separating detailed artwork into single color plates or screens similar to traditional silk screen printing process.

The first two seasons of this, Analog used this technique in creating garments for (our buddy) Trevor Andrew's signature line, and this current winter season (2010), they took it to a whole new level with the Altar Jacket, a faux sublimated denim, basically a leather biker jacket with patches and zip off sleeves (available now, $259.99 retail).

Red Bull THRE3STYLE Hits Denver

Red Bull Thre3Style is an innovative concept that gives highly skilled DJs a platform to battle, perform, gain notoriety and express themselves in a party atmosphere. Unlike other DJ battles that are based on more technical aspects, this is a creative and unique format that seeks to find the DJ that has best perfected the true art of how to “rock the party.” Eight of Denver's top DJs will fight for the crowd’s favor, each with a 10 minute set that MUST contain at least three different musical genres (with no mixing programs allowed). A panel of music industry judges will select the winners based on track selection, creativity, mixing skills, stage presence and crowd reaction.

Red Bull Thre3style is an international event series, and will feature 14 events across the United States, culminating in the U.S. National Finals in Denver on October 7. In addition to Los Angeles, cities participating include: Charlotte, Dallas, Nashville, Denver, Birmingham, Orlando, Phoenix, Miami, Houston, Pittsburgh, Las Vegas, St. Louis and Cincinnati. The winner from the U.S. National Finals will advance to compete in the Global Finals in Paris, France, where they will compete against the winners from twelve countries: Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Columbia, Ecuador, France, Japan, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Burton Meat Eaters Collection

Here's a look at Burton's Meat Eaters Collection. Done completely on the low, and so limited that only a handful of core shops will have them, the Meat Eaters Collection was housed in a bloody red stuffed-bear strewn closet accessible to most only through the peephole above. Radcollector got inside to check out the Board Amazing, which comes with two-dimensional bindings already on the board and a Truth sticker that never comes off, the Sweet Talker, a gnarly “I don’t give a fuck” board, and the Road Soda collabo with Cheech and Chong, which might just be the best snowboard graphic of the year. Team Colorado is a talented mixture of experience and youth that could bring home more than a half dozen medals from Vancouver.Vail's Lindsey Vonn is the big name, and will be a medal favorite in three alpine events.

Nordic combined athletes Todd Lodwick and Johnny Spillane, both from Steamboat Springs, will challenge for individual medals and will help make the U.S. a strong contender in the four-man team event.

USA Today got a chance to meet up with snowboard industry giant Jake Burton and discuss what has been going on lately with the company. Jake spoke a bit about the upcoming winter Olympics being held in Vancouver for which Burton actually designed the U.S. snowboard team's uniform. To Jake's amusement, this caused a bit of controversy for its nontraditional fitting. The weak economy has proved a blow to this expensive sport where his privately held snowboard company holds 40% of the world's market. Last week, Louie Vito, Too Short, The Trouble Gang and a slew of Frank151 cohorts (including Z-Trip, Santigold, Kenna, Lord Jamar, Jasmine Solano, Stunnaman, Jofo and The Mr. Move) took the town of Aspen and the Belly Up venue by storm for the X-Games, with crazy performances by Short Dog, The Trouble Gang. Terry Urban of the Press Play show with Mick Boogie, just dropped a mixtape in memorandum of the aniversary of J. Dilla's birthday. He mentioned Dilla being a huge influence on him, while growing up in the mid-west and blended these tracks years ago, but didn't feel they were up to Dilla fan's standards. RIP J. Dilla

The Most Colorful River In The World

The Rio Caño Cristales, also known as "the river that ran away to paradise", "the most beautiful river in the world", and "the river of five colours". is world famous for its colorful display, located near the town of La Macarena in Colombia, South America.

During a brief span between the wet and dry seasons , when the water level is just right, the many varieties of algae and moss located at the bottom of the river, bloom in a brilliant display of colors. Areas of yellow, blue, green, black, and red - and a thousand shades in between - coat the river.

Frank151 and Z-Trip Tear Up Denver For SIA

The SIA (Snowsports Industries of America) Tradeshow made its way to Denver, Colorado last weekend after a 35-year reign in Las Vegas. Of course there would still be the regular business of any tradeshow: industry leaders wooing retailers and showing off next year's products, up-and-coming grassroots brands trying to get their foot in the door and media outlets of every shape and size there to cover it all. But one big question that was on a lot of people's minds was, "Would it be as fun?" Luckily, Special Blend, Atmosphere Clothing and Frank151 were there to answer that question by hosting the best party of the weekend on opening night with DJ Z-Trip at Beta Nightclub.

On Thursday, January 28th, Z-Trip and his sidekick for the weekend Goldenchyld played to a packed house of both out-of-town SIA peeps and Denver locals for hours on end, juggling beats back and forth on four turntables and sending shockwaves of bass through Beta's massive Funktion One speaker system. As one the best dance clubs in the country, Beta's combination of stellar sound, sexy atmosphere and superb service always makes for a good night. Naturally there were some patrons who ended up getting kicked out and probably wouldn't agree with that statement, but it wouldn't really be a proper snowboard party without some form of debauchery. But those who managed to stay inside had an awesome time and Z-Trip brought the bangers and fired up the crowd like no one else can.

Cop Pulls Over Septic-Tank Truck, Finds 700 Lbs Of Pot Inside

On January 27, 2010 at about 4:00 pm, a DPS officer was patrolling on northbound Interstate 19 in the area of kilometer 40 (near Tubac, Ariz. which is located about 35 miles south of Tucson, Ariz.). The officer noticed a septic tank truck, which was also northbound, was displaying an invalid license plate. The officer stopped the septic tank truck and contacted the driver, a male subject. During the contact the officer found that the commercial vehicle markings on the truck were not valid commercial markings. After completing the stop the officer asked for and was given permission to search the vehicle.

Upon opening the holding tank on the septic tank truck the officer saw bales of marijuana inside. The officer removed approximately 743 pounds of marijuana from the holding tank. The street value of the marijuana is $409,000.

CNN posted a new article detailing a first-of-its-kind $7,000 talking sex robot, named Roxxxy. This 5'7, 120-pound woman can talk with you for hours on end about your interest and have sex with you whenever you want. Ideal mate, huh? Inventor Daniel Hines unveiled Roxxxy last month at the Adult Entertainment Expo in Las Vegas, Nevada. With the market for lifelike dolls, sex-toys, and sex-chat phone lines keeping lonely consumers company for years now, Roxxxy is the ultimate simulated escort. Her body is made from the same stuff as prosthetic limbs, she runs on a self-contained battery, and her chest pumps heated air through a tube that winds through her body, keeping her warm to the touch. Oh, and she has sensors that trigger vocal responses when touched, as well as shudder movements to mimic an orgasm. According to the report, his customer base? Shy, awkward or older men who "have trouble meeting girls." When asked what his inspiration was for creating the doll, Hines said that "after 9/11, I wanted to give back." God Bless America.

At age seven Shaun landed his first sponsor with Burton snowboards, and the rest is history. We got to see some exclusive clips of the tricks he plans to use for the upcoming Olympics in Vancouver this March.

Last Friday night at Mile High Station in Denver, CO, Frank151 and Snowboard Mag joined forces and did it properly once again for their Annual SIA Tradeshow Party, bringing out Wu-Tang's HNIC, RZA and FRANKRADIO's very own Wiz Khalifa & Jasmine Solano to put the smash down on the mountains! Big ups to all who came out to support and enjoy the festivities with us, and we're definitely looking forward to doing it just as BIG once again next year!
