SKYLAB Announces September Date And New Location

This fall, Triad Dragons and Beatport announce the return of the 16th year of SKYLAB music festival – with a new location at the Denver Coliseum on Saturday night, September 25, 2010.

After wrapping up this year’s Global Dance Festival, the largest dance-music event in the Rocky Mountains, SKYLAB’s space theme will be out-of-this-world with an increased capacity of 9500. Enter The Launch Pad, NRG Fuel Pod and the Global Command Module stages to experience performances by international and local talent at Colorado’s only space-themed music-and-arts festival. Headliners include dance music pioneer and one of the world’s top trance producers, FERRY CORSTEN from the Netherlands; America’s favorite house DJ BAD BOY BILL; one of today’s most talked-about producers, WOLFGANG GARTNER; SHOWTEK, dubbed the world’s hardest dance act and performing for the first time; jungle icon DIESELBOY; house diva DJ IRENE; and performances by Colorado-based DJs DRAGON, MANUFACTURED SUPERSTARS and TRAJIKK. Completing the lineup on the NRG Fuel Pod stage are V2 ALLSTARS and DJ NORI with RUMBLEJUNKIE, MLE, ISHE, DAYQUIL vs SERV ONE, SOLEIL vs SOLID and DESPISE vs SHOEBOX on the Global Command Module stage.

The Most Colorful River In The World

The Rio Caño Cristales, also known as "the river that ran away to paradise," "the most beautiful river in the world," and "the river of five colours," is world famous for its colorful display, located near the town of La Macarena in Colombia, South America.

During a brief span between the wet and dry seasons when the water level is just right, the many varieties of algae and moss located at the bottom of the river bloom in a brilliant display of colors. Areas of yellow, blue, green, black, and red coat the water.

The part of the river where the colorful blooms occur is quite isolated and is not accessible by road. Adventurous tourists can now fly into La Macarena and make their way to to the river site on foot as part of a guided tour. The site was effectively closed to tourists for several years because of guerrilla activity in the region along with concerns about the impact of unregulated tourist traffic. However, the site was reopened to visitors in 2009. So far, only about 1,000 people have visited Caño Cristales, including around 100 foreign tourists.

Swollen Members Hip Hop Halloween

Swollen Members is on the road right now promoting their new album Armed To The Teeth. Along with Big B, (with the Denver Diggers' DJ Klaw), Common Market, and Bliss N Esso, Swollen Members are slaughtering stages from Oregon to Ontario. In what seemed like a perfect holiday for hip hop's most Dungeons and Dragons-derived rap group, the tour showed up in Denver just in time for Halloween.

Once again, Denver's intimate Marquis Theater played host to a classic underground hip hop show. The all-ages venue is a good mix of everything—with a solid sound system, a multi-leveled viewing area, easy access full bar, and NY style pizza slices right on site. For Halloween the place was packed with creepy characters and party people ready to ring in All Hallows' Eve with the Battle Axe Warriors.

Shipping-Container Solution For Haiti's Housing Crisis?

In the wake of the devastating earthquake in Haiti,  converted shipping containers are being looked at as a solution to the housing crisis. SEED is an organization of teachers and students hailing from Clemson University. The program takes advantage of an existing surplus of shipping containers and works with industry partners to research and develop an affordable housing solution for the Caribbean Region. They found that the Caribbean nations inherently import more goods than they export, generating a steady surplus of shipping containers. The containers are constructed of steel able to withstand winds of up to 140-mph, and provide 304 square feet of floor space. Associate-Professor Doug Hecker, who is heading the campaign, states that placing a few strategic cuts in the containers allows for enough airflow and light to make these sanctuaries livable. With a long-term commitment, these places of refuge can be made permanent. According to FastCompany.com, the containers are also augmented with another surplus item: 55-gallon drums fitted with an interior slip to protect against leaking.

Luxe De Vil Couture & Hair

Any die-hard Frank151 head knows that a proper fade is of the utmost importance.  Not only does it make you feel fresh, but the ladies like a clean cut too.  Here in Denver we do not have a Frank’s Chop Shop option and a good cut can be hard to find.  Trust me, I’ve been to one too many $7 hair cut joints that promise a good uptown, only to go home and straight shave my own head myself.  Which leads me directly to think of Josie.

Josie actually has a small sign that says, “I fix $7 haircuts.”  Josie is a super fly young lady who also happens to be a licensed barber, in multiple states, one of which is here in sweet home Colorado.   If you are not aware, there is a HUGE difference between a hairstylist and a barber, and Josie will be sure to let you know that difference, just ask.   Those of you familiar with Frank's are already in the know in regards to what a BARBER is and that’s probably a big part of why you go there.   Anyway, Josie works at LUXE DE VIL and is a kick ass barber (again, know the distinction) as well as a favorite stylist of many a posh woman.

In fact, it is my understanding that she and her fellow Luxe ladies are of the best with a process known as the Brazilian Blowout, a straightening (?) process which I really can’t tell you that much about as, like I indicated earlier, rock a pretty damned tight fade.  Josie has worked with Euphoria in Los Angeles for over two years, and has over 8 years of experience using American Crew’s (straight up men’s specific) techniques, tools, and products. Trained with Redken and Paul Mitchell, she’s not only an expert in Men’s hairstyles, but also quite familiar with the delicate art of shaving (you GOTTA check this out fellas!).

Forty Days Of Water Challenge

Commencing February 17th and lasting till April 3rd is Blood: Water Mission—a 40-day-challenge project empowering communities to work together against the HIV/Aids & water crises in Africa. By giving up the beverages you would normally drink in exchange for water, you can save money to help build clean water projects for communities in Uganda. Having the luxury to consume a variety of different drinks is definitely a privilege millions of people throughout the world do not have. It should be noted, many people have to walk miles each day to collect water that is then contaminated, and use that as their main source of sustainability. If you're a boss and think your up to the challenge please head over to the site here, or regardless if you feel like just placing a donation.

Red Bull THRE3STYLE Denver At The Church

Photos by Matt Alberts.

The Red Bull Thre3Style international event series came through Denver last Thursday for one of its 14 stops on the way to the U.S. National Finals in October, which also happens to be back in Denver. The Red Bull Thre3Style brings local DJs out for one night of party rocking to see who can most successfully blend at least three genres of music and get the place jumpin’. A discerning panel of judges including the Denver Diggers’ DJ Lowkey took notes on creativeness, technicality and overall energy that the elite crew of Denver’s finest brought to the stage. DJs Amen, Sounds Supreme, Soup, Psycho, Shares, Skip Rip, Mada and Magmanimous went head to head to see for the title of Denver’s best DJ, with a special closing performance by Jay-Z’s tour DJ Neil Armstrong.

The Church was the setting for this event, Denver's longtime staple of dance-oriented nightlife in the SoCo (South of Colfax) club district. Red Bull had a great presence as always, complete with the all-terrain mobile party unit parked outside, a well-designed lit logo over the stage and screens throughout the venue displaying each competitors’ name and time allotted.

Denver Diggers' DJ Lowkey got the night started right as the crowd filled in.

Never any shortage of B-Boys at a Denver party.

Westword Music Showcase 2010

Razhel, the human beat box was standing with us, enjoying the show as much as we were.

Bonnaroo, Wakarusa, Camp Bisco, Coachella….Westword Music Showcase?  This is the question a lot of Denver locals were asking themselves. We were rollin pretty deep, the entire Company-Of-Artists creative group and street team as well as a few FRANK151 Street Team members all pumped for a solid day of music, art and culture.  You could feel the electricity in the air the second we got there.  The sun was on its way up and the music was pretty mellow for the first couple sets we saw. We started at the main stage, getting all the preparations together, sipping some cool beer and taking it all in. The people were vibrant, from their clothes, to their inked skin. No one was out of place; everyone fit in.  We were all there for the music and that’s what gave way for the magic the night had in store.
