D*Face

Over the course of last weekend’s Oscars festivites, British artist D*Face placed two large-sized re-appropriated statues into the Los Angeles landscape. The Mels Drive-In statue featured the exposed flesh of an Oscar statue with the engraving “Beauty Is Skin” deep as a sort of statement to the current entertainment business.

Hipster Takeover (Video) / An Anatomy Of Hipsters

Student Jessica Lehrman made this piece on the visual nature of hipsters for a Visual Literacy class at Purchase College. We're definitely looking for your thoughts on this one. Are you in one of the categories of "hipster" mentioned in the above film? According to the film, you won't mention it if you are. Do you think this film will spawn a "hipster backlash"? How do hipsters, non-hipsters and the general public feel about this film? Either way, this film definitely had us in stitches, not to mention we've seen about 30% of every person in this film walking around the city.

LA Smoke Signals : The DJ Babu Interview

Interview conducted by LA Looter's representative Scotty Pippen

Dj Babu Beat Tape Vol. 2

"Back again." Dilated Peoples has never broken up. Evidence's recent Weatherman and Hangover projects have fans eager for his first official release on Rhymesayers this year. DJ Babu remains one of the hardest working DJs ever to do it. The Beat Junkies stay touring all year 'round, and are just sold out the recent Nightlife J Dilla tribute concert at The Echoplex with headliners Slum Village. Rakaa Iriscience's solo LP is coming soon, with Babs behind the boards in the studio. I had the pleasure of chopping it up with him at the legendary Dilated Peoples studio last week, where he touched on DJ culture, his production techniques, a slew of projects coming out in 2010, and everything else I could think to ask.
— Talk for a second about the difference Serato software has made in DJ culture, the relevance of vinyl in 2010 and beyond. Does is elevate or depreciate the art form?

Babu: Literally having to carry records is a big part. Like most things, every case is different. For some people, it's definitely made DJ careers possible that otherwise wouldn't have existed. I won't name names, but there are more and more supermodel DJs doing club gigs in Vegas every weekend. I'm not hating, it's no disrespect— to be clear. I think it's great that more and more people are discovering the art form, but a substantial part of those newcomers getting prominent gigs would not exist without the technology.

For what I do, I have to embrace whatever allows me to touch music. I've always said that. Whether it's the SP1200, Serato, Pro Tools, MPC, vinyl record, MP3...whatever makes it more accessible I'm down for. If the industry creates products that allow me to do that easier, I'm going to jump on that. Up until the late '80s / early '90s, everything in hip-hop culture was hand-me-down. Clothes were baggy because you were wearing your older brother's clothes. We looped eight-bar rock breakdowns in the park because there were no instrumental hip-hop albums like there are now. Hip-hop is a hand-me-down art form. There weren't inner-city arts and music programs. To a certain extent, we had to create ways to be creative.

Full interview after the jump.

RIP Corey Haim

coreyhaim

'80s babies remember Corey Haim well from his part in the film The Lost Boys, which launched "The Coreys" (Corey Haim and Corey Feldman) into the hearts of millions of teenage girls worldwide. The Two Coreys reality show on A&E was a disturbing look at the former teen stars that was frankly very hard to watch. These two "stars" seem to be a prime example of how the Hollywood lifestyle can chew people up, and spit them out. Haim was pronounced dead at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, CA last night. The full details are not known to us, but reports state an "accidental overdose". He was 38.
