Campagnola

1382 1st Avenue (between 73rd St & 74th St) , New York

Definitely the Italian gem of the UES. It's no Rao's, but definitely an amazing traditional, old school Italian joint. The waiters know whats up, huge selection of fresh seafood, great steaks and of course, all of those traditional Italian dishes and antipasto. Definitely a spot thats gonna thin out your pockets, but it's money well spent... if you have it. Mad respect to Campagnola.

114 N 6th St, Brooklyn

This East Village upstart proved to be so popular, the owners opened a second massive (and massively popular) location in Williamsburg. This original restaurant is miniscule in comparison, but it's designed in the same sleek lounge style. Service is brisk and friendly, and the hip, clubby music is never so loud that you have to shout to be heard. Start with the spicy beef salad or the Tup Tim Fritters, fried chicken and shrimp balls served with ...

Royale

157 Avenue C, New York

What this Alphabet City bar lacks in originality, it makes up for in comfort and simplicity. Every touch takes the tried-and-true route, from the dim lights and dark wood to the taps spouting Guinness and Blue Moon. The neighborhood's yuppies are compelled to put their pretensions aside--for the only things this laid-back bar could get snooty about are its heralded hamburger (one "Royale with Cheese") and a back patio with breathing room.

La Esquina

106 Kenmare St, New York

The neon sign reads corner, a nod to the deli that preceded it, but that’s just a colorful ruse. If La Esquina is as much stage set as restaurant, that’s because it’s owned by Serge Becker, the designer and nightlife entrepreneur behind such hipster loci as Bowery Bar, MK, and Area. The counter-service taqueria on Kenmare dispenses tacos and tortas (made, unfortunately, on baguettes instead of proper Mexican teleras), and a more extensive ...

Kates Joint

58 Avenue B, New York

The "veggie" burgers (and the full bar) are the main draws: ranging from the Super Veg-Burger with lettuce, tomato and Abijah's secret sauce to the McKate (two "un-beef" patties, special sauce, lettuce, dairy or nondairy cheese, etc.), with a pizza burger, chili cheese burger and a portobello mushroom burger as well. Soups, various fried apps, salads and sandwiches are also served. Come the weekend, locals pack the place for the super-sweet ...

Joes Shanghai

9 Pell St, New York

It's true that most of Joe's customers here aren't from Chinatown, and that Joe's menu offers some mall-friendly, not-so-Chinese creations, such as sesame chicken. Still, customers line up here for a reason: Joe's cuisine is consistently top-notch and otherwise authentic Shanghainese. Prices compare to the bigger restaurants in Chinatown, and the wall of critics' praises grows larger every year. It's difficult to find anything that isn't ...
