Frank151 x Seventh Letter Event in LA

This past Friday we celebrated Frank Chapter 41: The Seventh Letter, with a party at the SURU store in Los Angeles. Representatives from both the Frank and Seventh Letter crews were in attendance, along with plenty of other friends and family. Frank151.com contributor PartyWithPanda (www.PartyWithPanda.com) and a few other photographers were on hand to make sure anyone unable to attend still gets to share in the experience.

Thank you to everyone who came out to enjoy the good company, tasty food provided by the Taco Nazo truck, and great drinks courtesy of Sailor Jerry Rum!

As part of Google's "Chrome Experiments", the Canadian rock band Arcade Fire created an interesting music video but not in the traditional sense.

With the release of their third album "The Suburbs" in early August, the band, along with director Chris Milk, created an interactive music video for their song "We Used to Wait" that utilizes the latest web technology, HTML5, to bring you an experience that is unique to each person who views it.

The viewer is asked to supply the address of your childhood home. After that, the "interactive film" takes you on a nostalgic journey through the streets of the neighborhood you grew up on with the Arcade fire setting the mood.

With the advent of HTML5 upon us, this could be the start of a new form of creating music videos.

This past Saturday was the Rock The Bells music fest on Governors Island in New York. Frank came out in full force, giving out books and stickers at our tent. Thanks to everyone who came by.

The weather couldn't have been better for an outdoor music festival. With the main stage and the Paid Dues stage, there was never a lull in great music. Featured acts included Wu-Tang, A Tribe Called Quest, Lauryn Hill, and Snoop Dogg, and everyone who performed really did their thing. Besides the announced talents, quite a few cameos showed up, including Jay-Z, Beyonce, Busta Rhymes, John Legend, and Chris Rock.

There was so much going on, we had two great photographers there to make sure we didn't miss anything. Frank151 Photo Editor Craig Wetherby shot the show for us, along with legendary hip-hop photographer Joe Conzo. See their selects below...

Lastly we want to thank everyone at Rock The Bells for putting on an amazing show. It couldn't have gone better!

The nominees for the Texas State Fair's Annual Big Tex Choice Awards have been released. The Big Tex Choice Awards is an event where vendors try to outdo themselves by practically deep frying anything and everything they can think of to win the coveted "Best Taste & Most Creative" category. Last year's winner was Fried Butter and this year's heavyweight looks like its going to be the gut-busting Fried Beer.

Fried Beer is described as beer-filled pretzel pockets deep-fried to a golden brown crisp. One bite and the escaping beer serves as a dipping sauce.

You Gotta Love Texas.

RIME for Dolby Digital

A few months back I was hired by Dolby to paint a piece on video in a rundown section of Los Angeles. For this piece I attempted to create something inspired by an excerpt from a 1951 documentary, on the process and philosophy of Jackson Pollock. A lot of what Pollock says in the following clip is relatable to my experiences with free-styling graffiti pieces. Pollock talks about the comfort and expressive feeling he gets when working large and loose. This way of approaching work has been something that I have focused on in the past 15 years of my 20 year career as a writer.

Rock The Bells 2010 LA

Rock The Bells kicked off last weekend with a show in LA (San Bernardino) and a show in SF, which were huge successes. This year touted Rock The Bells' best lineup to date, featuring Snoop Dogg, Tribe Called Quest, Lauryn Hill, Wu Tang, Rakim, Slick Rick, Immortal Technique, Wiz Khalifa, and many more. The estimated attendance at RTB LA was 25,000-30,000. Being able to catch all of the classic albums performed in their entirety, along with some other great acts, was something special. Lauryn Hill actually showed up and performed a solid set featuring some of her classic songs.

The Frank tent was in full effect, giving out Frank Books and spreading the word. We got a lot of love from people who follow Frank and were super excited to see us. Thanks to all the homies who stopped by and showed support. Shout outs to our friends at the neighboring Scion tent, who kept thousands of attendees alive by passing out free ice towels to help cool down as it was a scorcher out there!

Erykah Badu must pay a $500 fine and serve six months on probation for her naked stroll through downtown Dallas, Texas, while making a music video last March, a city official has confirmed. Badu reached a plea deal to settle a misdemeanor disorderly conduct citation issued after she released a music video, according to Dallas spokesman Jose Torres.

The TONS of exposure and controversy this video has caused is going to bump her new album sales like crazy.

Vikings fans are stupid. Actually, let me correct that. All NFL football fans are stupid. But the Viking fan, gets on my nerves the most. Why? Because I am one, a Viking fan that is. But I am also realistic and knowledgeable about the game. My expertise goes way past running a 80 yard fly pattern on Madden, and then wondering why it doesn't work in real life. Which sums up the normal NFL fan. So when Brett Favre was coaxed out of his mansion in Mississippi yesterday by three teammates to rejoin them for one last shot at a Super Bowl, excuse me, but I wasn't all smiles. You see as a Viking fan, I know the cursed history of the Norse. While most purple priders were booking flights for Dallas and chanting 16-0 on social networking sites, I just sat back and remembered. Remembered the seasons of 1999 and 2001. It's common knowledge to most Vikings fans that after a season of success they follow it up with a season of disappointment. Retched and heart breaking disappointment.

Lord Of Griffith 2 Recap

This last Sunday was the second Annual Lord Of Griffith Race, which featured 54 bikers on fixies mashing out on a 21.65 mile course. The race is really about the Lord, for it included shortcuts, which was a necessity for the W, but was only known by the locals & the people who put in their studies. 1st place went to Bud Abille, hailing from Long Beach, who scouted routes & trained the park in order to get familiar with the course. In the end, everyone who completed the course was a winner & many prizes went around to participants thanks to all of the sponsors involved. The after party was held @ Ronin Gallery, where the horde of exhausted thirsty bikers drank cases of PBR in place of water. The LA biker scene was strong & this event will have a lifespan for many more years to come.

Premier Carribean culture site Largeup.com has recently dropped their exclusive feature with Collie Buddz. It's a recap of the (NY Kings sponsored) Collie Buddz event that went down at Santos Party House in NYC, but it's way more than that. The video and photo feature includes some great fashion from several brands, and gives the reader a unique look into the Bermudian sensation that took the world by storm with his hip-hop influenced Reggae sound. Collie Buddz mixtape post on Frank151 was one of the more popular posts the year it went up, so this is a good follow up to that.

Presented by Frank’s Chop Shop and Wash House Records, the Kingpin Suite at the Palms will be the official venue. The festivities will begin on Tuesday, August 17th from 11PM after the first official day of the trade show. Along with the mentioned brands, Frank Book Chapter 35 curators—Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E.—will also be supporting the event. The energy of the party will be in the hands of DJ Franzen along with DJ De.

Play Nintendo With Your Eyes

This is both completely cool and totally useless: a group of engineers going by Waterloo Labs in Austin, Texas created a way of controlling an original NES by simply moving your eyes.

By using electrodes placed around the eyes to track the movement of a players eyeballs, they were able to jury rig a Nintendo to accept eye movement as controller input. And it works!

Take that Xbox Kinect !!

DMC East Coast Finals 2010

The DMC finals were on Saturday, August 7th at Santos in Chinatown, NYC. Its was a great opportunity to see some of the best DJs from around the country throw it down right here in New York! We even had NY's very own GrandMaster Supreme rock the house with his nunchucks. The club was packed and the vibes were great. The crowd was feeling it until DJ Red Alert announced the winners—apparently the crowd had the competition scored differently. DJ Etronik came in first, followed by DJ Steel, and finally Grandmaster Supreme in third (most of the crowd had him down as the winner).

Carlos Alberto is the man. The Portugese carpenter's skills might be a threat to ol' boy from New Yankee Workshop...no offense to Norm. Vespas have been a stylish choice in alterior methods of transportation for a minute but this latest custom model entitled the 'Vespa Daniela' is truly a work of art and stellar craftsmanship. Completely handcrafted, super ill multi-tone paneling and spinning roulette wheels (wayyyyy cooler than spinning rims). Did you catch that??...spinning roulette wheels...nuff said.
